INTRODUCTION 1
Purpose 1-1
DZK BBS-List and the accompanying viewer were
created to fill a void in the BBS community. All
the national BBS lists, even the most popular ones,
lack the amount of information about each board for
a user to make any sort of judgement as to the
quality of that board. DZK BBS-List solves that
problem by removing the standard constraint of 80
characters per BBS by supplying not only the BBS
name, number, and other pertinent information, but
also by providing a list of mail nets the BBS is
in, and an 80 character description of the BBS.
DZK took this idea one step further by putting all
this information into a more compact datafile, and
providing a utility to not only view the list, but
also to print the list to the printer, and a
variety of (.FON) telecommunication programs'
dialing directories.
Features 1-2
■ An easy to use windowing interface with built in
context sensitive help.
■ Quick search routines to speed your search for a
BBS.
■ The ability to limit which BBSs to list based on
criteria such as baud rate, number of megs,
number of nodes, area code/location, or mail
networks.
■ The ability to have multiple criteria for
listing.
■ The ability to list BBSs to the screen, to a
file, to the printer, or to a telecommunication
terminal dialing directory (.FON file).
■ The ability to flag BBSs while listing them to
screen in order to later output them to a file,
the printer, or a telecommunications terminal
dialing directory (.FON file).
■ Cholesterol free, and low in Sodium and Saturated
fats.
Legalities 1-3

MAIN MENU 2
∙4∙
When you start the program, you are presented with the DZK
BBS-List Viewer introduction screen, which says "press any
key to continue". After you press a key you will be
presented with the DZK BBS-List Viewer (hereafter referred to
as the viewer) main menu, which contains several options.
Each option has one character high-lighted, this is the
'hotkey'. To execute an option press its hotkey (i.e. to
execute Quit, press 'Q'). You can also select an option by
moving the high-light bar to the option and pressing enter.
The high-light bar can be moved with either the arrowkeys, or
TAB (for down) and Shift-TAB (for up). Certain options, such
as Drop to DOS, and exit can be accessed from anywhere in the
program using their special shortcut keys. These special key
combinations are listed next to the option on the main menu.
The Alt-D combination will initiate a Drop to DOS, and the
Alt-X combination will initiate a complete exit of the
program.
About DZK 2.1
The 'About DZK' option is designed to let you, the
user, know more about us. This function will
display a variety of information about DZK, the
viewer, other DZK products, and legalities. It is
basically an extended introduction to our product
Selective Listing 2.2
The Selective listing option will display a submenu
which will allow you to define search criteria for
the list. If you wish to view or print the list in
its entirety do not select this option. This is,
however, a very powerful feature. It will allow
you to view BBSs that meet certain criteria which
you define. You can select which area code the
BBSs must be, or state, or the minimum number of
nodes or megs a BBS must have in order for it to be
listed or printed. This will allow you to easily
isolate those systems which are in your area, or
run your favorite software, or are large enough to
make them worthwhile to call.
Navigation 2.2.1
The selective listings menu may be like none you
have seen before. We developed a new style of menu
to fit the specific needs of this program. We
considered a set of pull down menus, but decided on
this system, user response will determine whether
we stick to it in future releases, or switch to a
more standard pull down menu system.
Because of the unique design of the selective
listings menu we feel it necessary to go in depth
on how to use (or navigate) it.
To move from item to item you can use the arrow
keys, or TAB, Shift TAB as described before. These
∙5∙
key combinations will always move you the next item
going in a logical left to right order. To
activate/deactivate an item, simply press the space
bar when you are in the check box next to that
item. If you have edited the item, deactivating it
will not clear it, but will make the viewer ignore
it until you reactivate it. To activate and edit
an item, hit the enter key when the cursor is in
that item's check box. Hitting enter will flag
that item and place you in a position to edit the
search criteria. If the item is a quantity or
string you will then be put in the input box where
you should type the number or string desired and
hit enter to quite. If the item selected is a
list, a pop-up window will appear listing all the
possible items. Use the cursor keys, and page-up,
page-down to browse through the possible
selections. To select one, hit the space key, and
a little 'x' will appear in the check box next to
the item, signifying that it is selected. Hit the
space again, and the 'x' will disappear. If you
attempt to select more items than is allowed for
that search item the computer will beep. When you
are finished making your selections hit the ESCape
key. ESCape is the universal exit key and will get
you out of almost anything. When you are
completely done with all the selective listing
options hit escape to return to the main menu.
String Search 2.2.2
The string search function allows you to enter an
eight character search string. Only BBSs with this
exact string the in BBS name or in the BBS
Description will be listed. The String that you
enter in the input box can be up to eight
characters in length and can contain any
combination of numbers, letter, or other
characters, including all 256 ASCII characters.
Minimum Megabytes 2.2.3
This field allows you to specify the minimum
storage capacity (in megabytes) that a BBS must
have in order for it to be listed. In order to get
into the list in the first place, a BBS must have
at least 50 megabytes of online storage, but by
today's standards this is not much. Although
number of megabytes is not a 100% accurate
representation of the quality of a BBS, it is
significant if you are looking for BBSs with large
file bases, or many nationally echoed message
bases. In the input field enter the MINIMUM number
of megabytes BBSs should have in order to be
listed. Remember 1 Gigabyte = 1000 Megabytes. Any
BBSs with fewer megabytes than defined here will
not be listed if you activate the minimum megabytes
option.
Area Code 2.2.4
∙6∙
This field will allow you to enter 1 United States
area code, or foreign country code. This is
generally a three digit number like 908 (DZK's area
code). Only BBSs within this areacode will be
listed. This is useful for finding BBSs that are a
local, or low charge call from your home or place
of business.
Minimum Nodes 2.2.5
This field is similar to minimum megabytes except
that you are not putting a restriction on storage
space, but on number of available call in lines.
Today, most BBSs offer 1 node. Some BBS
enthusiasts run BBSs of 2-4 lines, and some people
run even larger systems (but usually charge money
for more than nominal access). In the input box
enter the minimum number of nodes you wish a BBS to
have (the default value is one), the viewer will
then only list BBSs that have at least that number
of nodes. 'Better BBSs have more nodes' is a
common generalization but false, if number of
megabytes is a poor indicator of a BBS's quality
then number of nodes is an even worse indicator.
State/Country List 2.2.6
The State/Country option will allow you to choose
up to ten states and/or countries to search for
BBSs. This may be helpful if you live in a tri-
state area and are only interested in relatively
close BBSs, or are interested in BBSs in Eastern
Europe. When you edit this option you will be
placed in a pop-up window pick-list which will
allow you to check the states and/or countries you
wish to include. Only countries/states which have
BBSs in the list will be available to choose, so if
the one you want isn't there that means there are
no BBSs in that state/country. When this option is
active, the viewer will only list BBSs in the
states/countries you have selected.
Mail Networks 2.2.7
The mail networks option will allow you to pick up
to three mail networks that BBSs MUST be in, in
order to be listed by the viewer. When you edit
this field you will be presented with a list of the
available network types. Check off the ones (up to
three) that you wish every listed BBS to have.
This field is helpful for those of you interested
primarily in messaging, or in finding a system from
where you can contact large groups of people.
Software type 2.2.8
When people argue over what makes a good BBS, the
topic of BBS Software is invariably the first
topic. Everyone has a preference. Some prefer
∙7∙
Wildcat! because of its speed and features, others
prefer WWIV because of its alias's and flamboyant
atmosphere.
This option is designed with these people in mind.
It allows you to specify up to 10 software types
that you like. The viewer will then only list BBSs
which run one of the selected software types.
This allows you to weed out BBSs which do not run
software that you are comfortable with. When you
edit this field you will be able to check off up to
ten software types. Software types consist of
brand, and version. You can therefore select
Remote Access 1.XX BBSs while eliminating Remote
Access 0.XX BBSs.
Baud rate selection 2.2.9
This set of items allows you select the baud rates
BBSs must support in order to be listed. You can
select any one, or combination of baud rates by
checking off the box next the baud rate you wish to
select. The viewer will then only list BBSs which
have a top baud rate of your selection. This is
primarily designed to allow callers with high speed
modems to eliminate BBSs with lower speed modems.
Listing 2.3
The listing option from the main menu will put you
in an interactive listing session that will allow
you to browse the BBSs that meet the criteria set
in selective listings menu. From this interactive
session you can view any BBS, send it to an ASCII
text file, print it to a device, or store it in a
.FON dialing directory. You will be able to do
this with each individual BBS, a set of marked
BBSs, or all those BBSs which meet the search
requirements.
Navigation 2.3.1
Unlike the selective listing menu, the interactive
listing session follows a much more familiar way of
doing things. The screen is divided into two
windows, top and bottom. The top window has a 1
line summary of each BBS with a movable highlight
bar. The full information for the highlighted BBS
appears in the window at the bottom. To move the
highlight bar you can use the up or down arrow keys
to go one at a time, or you can use page-up, page-
down to go a full page at a time (a page is
considered the number of BBSs that can be listed in
the top window at any one time). The HOME key will
take you to the first BBS in the list, the END key
will take you to the last. A scroll bar at the
bottom of the upper window shows your relative
position in the list. To mark a BBS for output as
described above, all you need do is hit SPACE when
the BBS is highlighted. This will cause an
∙8∙
asterisk to appear next to the BBS to show that it
is marked for output. To toggle this off, hit the
SPACE on that BBS again, or hit delete to remove
ALL the marks. Marks will remain even if you
change the search criteria.
Printing a record 2.3.2
You can output a single BBS record, or all marked
records from the interactive viewing session. To
print an individual BBS record, select that BBS
with the highlight bar and press enter. To output
all marked records hit the F5 function key. You
will then be shown a window with a selection of
output modes.
ASCII text file 2.3.2.1
The first option in the pop-up window is ASCII text
file. This will allow you to create, or append an
plain ASCII text file (like this one) with the
complete information about that BBS as it is
displayed in the bottom window. If you select this
option a pop-up input window will ask you for a
full path and filename to output to. If you have
previously outputted to an ASCII file in this
session, the last path and filename you outputted
to will be there as a default, hitting enter will
automatically append to that file. You can also
edit the default path and filename to change it
slightly or completely.
Printer 2.3.2.2
This will allow you to output all the data about
the selected BBS to the printer. The information
will print in much the same way as it would to a
plain ASCII text file. It will look similar to the
window at the bottom of the screen.
(.FON) Dialing Directories 2.3.2.3
This is by far the most unique and attractive
option of the DZK BBS-List Viewer. It allows you
to create or append a dialing directory with the
BBS name, megs, phone number and speed. This is a
convenient way of dialing up a newfound BBS. The
old conventional way involved jotting the pertinent
information about a BBS down on paper, and then
entering it into your communications program by
hand. This feature of the viewer simplifies and
automates this procedure, and turns a hassle into a
convenience.
This option will present you with a pop-up window
containing a list of all the supported dialing
directory types (most popular types are supported),
simply hit enter on the one you use, and you will
be prompted for the full path and filename of the
file to create or append. If you have run this
function earlier in the current session, the last
path and file name you selected will be there.
Hitting enter will append this file, or you can
∙9∙
edit the path and filename for a different output
file.
If the dialing directory you have selected in full,
you will be notified, and given the option to
output the BBS to a different file. Read the
documentation of your communications program for
more information on the path, filename, and size of
its dialing directory.
As of this release of Boyan, Telemate, and Telix
are the only communications program supported, due
to our inability to obtain any other formats. If
you have the formats of any other communications
program that you would like DZK to include in its
next release of the viewer, please send to DZK via
the means listed at the end of this documention.
Printing all matching records 2.3.3
This is similar to printing a single record
however, instead of just outputting the highlighted
record, it outputs all the records that meet the
search criteria set in the selective listing
submenu. This is useful for outputting all the
matching BBSs to a text file or printer so that
they can be reviewed in the comfort of an easy
chair, or in a more familiar file browser, like
list by Vernon Buerg. You can output all the
matching records in the same formats that you could
output single records to, including to an ASCII
text file, to a device, or to a .FON dialing
directory. To print all the records press select
print records from the BBS listing submenu.
ASCII text file 2.3.3.1
This will cause all the matching BBSs to be printed
to a neatly formatted plain ASCII text file (like
this one), each record will be formatted in a
similar fashion to the lower window in the
interactive listing session. After you select this
function, a pop-up input window will appear for you
to enter the full path and file name of the file to
output to. Enter the full path and filename, and
hit enter, the viewer will then create or append
that file with all the matching BBS records.
Printer 2.3.3.2
This will cause all the matching BBSs to be printed
to the printer in neatly formatted ASCII text, each
record will be formatted in a similar fashion to
the lower window in the interactive listing
session.
(.FON) Dialing Directory 2.3.3.3
As was stated before this is by far the most unique
and attractive option of the DZK BBS-List Viewer.
It allows you to create or append a dialing
directory with the BBS name, megs, phone number and
∙10∙
speed. This is a convenient way for someone who is
new to the world of online communications to create
a complete dialing directory of the best BBSs. The
old conventional way involved jotting the pertinent
information about a BBS down on paper, and then
entering it into your communications program by
If the dialing directory you have selected in full,
or fills while being written, you will be notified,
and given the option to output the remainder of the
BBS records to a different file. Read the
documentation of your communications program for
more information on the path, filename, and size of
its dialing directory.
As of this release of Boyan, Telemate, and Telix
are the only communications program supported, due
to our inability to obtain any other formats. If
you have the formats of any other communications
program that you would like DZK to include in its
next release of the viewer, please send to DZK via
the means listed at the end of this documention.
Finding Distribution Sites 2.4
This option will allow you to view and print all of
the BBSs that are official DZK BBS-List
distribution sites. You will be able to choose to
view these on the screen, or print them to ASCII
file, printer, or a .FON dialing directory. These
options work identically to the BBS listing option
described above. Please refer to that section for
help on how to use the interactive environment, and
your other output options.
DOS Shell 2.5
This option of the main menu allows you to invoke a
second copy of the DOS COMMAND.COM command line
interpreter while keeping your complete DZK BBS-
List Viewer session in memory. This is handy if
you wish to quickly go to DOS to look something up,
or preform a quick task without loosing all the
settings you made during your listing session.
This item can be activated from the main menu using
the standard means, or from ANYWHERE in the program
using the key combination Alt-D.
∙11∙
Quit 2.6
This functions does exactly what its called. It
clears memory of your viewing session and returns
you to the DOS prompt you where you started it.
Aside from the menu the standard means of selecting
this option, the ESCape key from the main menu, and
the Alt-X combination from ANYWHERE in the program
will provide an immediate exit to DOS. Be careful,
this will cause all the selections you made during
your session to be lost.
If you select quit from the main menu a window will
warm you that all your settings will be lost.
Hitting escape will bring you back to the main
menu, while any other key will bring you to DOS.
Alt-X, however, will bring you instantly to DOS
from anywhere in the program.
∙12∙
